How Many Rounds Is a Forward Deployed Engineer Interview?
Across the 44 companies whose forward deployed loop we can describe stage by stage, the median is 5 rounds, with a range of 2 to 7. Here is the full distribution, which rounds recur, and why the count matters less than the mix.

Five rounds is the median. Across the 44 companies in our registry whose forward deployed loop we can describe stage by stage, round counts run from 2 to 7, and five is both the median and the most common single value.
That number is worth less than the distribution behind it, and much less than knowing which rounds appear. Both are below.

Thirty-six of the 44 sit between four and six rounds. The shape has converged, which was not true when this role was still being improvised company by company.
Why the count is a weak signal
Companies count differently, and we record each one's own framing rather than forcing them onto a common scale. One company calls the recruiter call a stage. Another describes the identical process as three interviews because it counts only the technical rounds.
The compression problem is larger. The shortest loops in our data are two and three stages, and they do not remove work so much as fold it together. A single onsite that runs four back-to-back sessions is one stage in a company's own description and a full day in a candidate's calendar. One two-stage loop in our registry ends in a paid multi-hour build treated as a real customer deliverable, which is the deciding round and, by itself, more work than some five-round loops in total.
So a short loop is not a light loop. Judge by the rounds that appear.
The three rounds that recur
Across nearly every documented loop, three rounds show up, and they are the three that decide outcomes.
A coding or data exercise set inside a customer scenario. Not a puzzle. The problem arrives as a business situation with messy inputs, and the grading is as much about how you handle the mess as whether the algorithm is right. An ambiguous case study or decomposition round, usually with no code at all. You are handed a large, underspecified customer problem and scored on how you scope it. This is where strong engineers most often fail, because the instinct to start solving is exactly wrong. Scoping ambiguous problems is the technique, and the Palantir decomposition round is the canonical version.
A customer or stakeholder conversation. Sometimes a role-play, sometimes a hiring manager asking how you would explain a limitation to a non-technical buyer. It tests whether you can hold credibility in a room full of people who cannot read your code. The customer and behavioral questions cover it.
A loop that contains all three is a forward deployed loop whatever the job title says. A loop that contains none of them is a standard software engineering loop with a different header.
Where the long loops come from
The companies at six and seven stages generally run coding, data engineering and customer scenario work as separate rounds instead of combining them. That reflects how the company has organized its assessment rather than a higher bar. Databricks, SpaceX and AWS sit at the upper end in our data, at six to eight rounds depending on the team.
At the other end, the fastest documented loops close in one to two weeks. Speed tends to track company size rather than seniority of the role.
What to do with this
Prepare for the mix, not the count. If you know a company's loop is five stages but not which five, assume the three recurring rounds above are in there and prepare those first. That preparation transfers across the whole registry, which is the practical reason to work from the must-know questions rather than from one company's published process.

Round counts come from the structured stage lists in our interview-process research, covering the 44 of 101 tracked companies for which we can describe the loop stage by stage from public material. Each company's own framing of what constitutes a stage is preserved rather than normalized, which is why these counts should be compared with care. Counting the recruiter screen as a round, as most companies do, a typical loop is a screen, a technical screen, a coding or data exercise, a case study or system design round, and a hiring manager conversation.

The distribution is more useful than the median here. Five being the mode as well as the median tells you the loop has genuinely converged on a shape, which was not true three years ago when every company improvised this role.
Agreed, and the convergence is on the mix rather than the count. What changed is that the decomposition round stopped being a Palantir peculiarity and became standard. That is the round to prepare for regardless of whether the loop is four stages or seven.
Reader question: when a company says five rounds, does that include the recruiter screen or not?
Usually yes, and that is why comparing two companies' round counts is less informative than it looks. One will count the recruiter call and a take-home as stages, another will describe the same process as three interviews. We record each company's own framing rather than normalizing them, and the method note at the bottom says so.
The two-stage loops deserve a warning label. I went into one expecting a light process and the second stage was a paid full-day build treated as a real customer deliverable. Fewer stages, far more work per stage.
