FDE Salary 2026: US Bands and India LPA Ranges

What a Forward Deployed Engineer is paid in 2026. Vetted US bands by company, labelled base or total, plus the three India routes in LPA: global-remote roughly 35 to 150 LPA, MNC India offices 22 to 80 LPA, India startups from about 18 LPA. Reported and approximate.

Read this first: the numbers are reported and approximate

Compensation for this role moves fast and varies enormously by company, level, and equity. Everything below is reported or approximate, drawn from public aggregators (levels.fyi, Glassdoor, 6figr), job posts, and 2026 industry reports — and public aggregators tend to lag the live market by several months. Treat these as ranges to calibrate expectations, not quotes.

One structural point dominates everything: at frontier AI labs in 2026, equity is reportedly 60–70% of total compensation. Base salaries across payers differ by maybe 2.5x, but total-comp differs by 5x or more — and the gap is almost entirely equity. So a "base salary" number tells you very little about the real package.

United States — Palantir FDSE

Palantir is the reference point because it originated the role. As of mid-2026, levels.fyi reported FDSE total compensation roughly in the $171K–$295K band with a median near $211K, and higher figures (into the $400K+ range) at senior levels. Glassdoor's US base estimates clustered lower (around a $155K average base, since base excludes equity).

By level, reported total comp looked roughly like: mid-level $205K–$300K, senior $300K–$486K, and staff $630K+. As always, equity and refreshers swing these materially.

United States — frontier AI labs (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.)

Frontier labs pay at the top of the market. Reported 2026 packages put mid-to-senior FDEs around $350K–$550K total comp, with staff and principal levels crossing $600K and the most senior packages reported north of $785K — and principal-level total comp reported past $1M at the extreme.

These are top-of-market, equity-heavy numbers, not what a typical FDE earns. The broad market for the role in 2026 is more commonly cited around $300K–$600K total comp in the US, with the seven-figure figures reserved for senior-plus people at the hottest labs.

India: the route matters more than the company

There is no single FDE salary in India, and quoting one is the fastest way to mislead someone. Compensation splits by the route you enter through, and the gap between routes is larger than the gap between companies inside a route. The full tier table, with the companies we classify into each, renders below this article.

The three routes are a global AI lab hiring an India-based person (usually a global-remote contract, often USD-denominated, the highest paying and the hardest to get), a multinational with an established India engineering centre in Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Pune hiring on a local band, and an India-headquartered company hiring locally with equity carrying much of the value. Moving up a route is worth more than a promotion inside one.

For calibration on how much the route matters: a small, older Glassdoor India sample for Palantir FDE (12 salaries, mid-2025) showed an average near ₹12.35 LPA. That is almost certainly local hires rather than global-remote packages, and it sits an order of magnitude below the global-remote senior band. Same title, same company, different route. Within India, Bengaluru is generally the highest-paying AI hub, often a 20 to 30% premium.

One warning about numbers you will see elsewhere. A US-posted band converted to INR at the spot rate is not an India offer, and any site showing you a US range in LPA is doing arithmetic rather than research. We never convert, which is why the US table above and the India table below are separate.

What actually moves your number

Three levers dominate: the company tier (frontier lab > MNC platform > startup, by a wide margin), your level (equity scales super-linearly at senior+), and whether the package is USD-denominated global-remote or a local market rate. Geography within the US has largely converged toward parity for this role, and the on-site versus remote base gap is small (a few percent).

The practical takeaway: optimize for the company tier and the level you can credibly clear, and read the equity terms carefully — that's where the real money is and where the real risk lives.

Vetted bands, by company

HOW TO READ THIS

We publish a band only where we can trace it to a source, and we label which kind. That is why this table has 9 rows and not 101. 6 come from employer postings, meaning a band the company put on a real req. The rest are public aggregators, which blend self-reported submissions and skew toward the people who choose to report. Where a company pays differently by title, the row names the title the band belongs to: a band attached to the wrong title is the most common error in published FDE compensation data.

Databricks: Median base across several recent Databricks FDE postings sits near 216K.

Cognition: This band is the Applied AI Engineer posting. Candidate guides report lower base bands on the San Francisco forward deployed postings and a federal track reaching about 225K.

Scale AI: Base only, so treat it as a floor. Bonus and private equity sit on top.

Google DeepMind: Plus a 15 percent bonus target, equity and benefits.

Glean: Plus equity, varying by level.

Google: Senior total compensation is reported up to around 700K including bonus and Alphabet equity.

OpenAI: Mid level. A large and approximate share is equity tied to a private valuation.

Anthropic: Senior base. Reported total compensation often crosses 500K.

Palantir: Common levels. Staff-level FDEs are reported above 600K.

India: the three routes, and who is on each

A single “FDE salary in India” number is misleading, because the three routes into the role pay differently enough that the route matters more than the company. Below is what each reportedly pays, and which of the companies we track we classify into it. The tier is our classification of the employer; the band is a reported range for that kind of employer, not a figure any of these companies published.

GLOBAL AI LAB, INDIA-BASED HIRE

A US or EU AI company with no large India engineering centre. An India-based hire here is usually a global-remote contract, often USD-denominated, which is the highest-paying route into the role from India and also the hardest to get.

LEVELREPORTED RANGE
Junior (0-2 yrs)₹35 LPA - ₹55 LPA
Mid (3-6 yrs)₹55 LPA - ₹90 LPA
Senior (7+ yrs)₹90 LPA - ₹1.5 Cr

Reported range for this type of employer, not a figure reported for this company. Whether an India-based hire is possible at all depends on their entity and visa position, so check their careers page before you plan around it.

MULTINATIONAL WITH AN INDIA ENGINEERING CENTRE

An established India presence, usually Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Pune, hiring on a local band rather than a global-remote one. Lower than the global-remote route and far more attainable, with the usual multinational benefits and stability.

LEVELREPORTED RANGE
Junior (0-2 yrs)₹22 LPA - ₹35 LPA
Mid (3-6 yrs)₹35 LPA - ₹55 LPA
Senior (7+ yrs)₹55 LPA - ₹80 LPA

Reported range for this type of employer, not a figure reported for this company. Bands vary widely by internal level, and the equity component at a listed company behaves very differently from startup equity.

INDIA-HEADQUARTERED AI COMPANY

Headquartered in India and hiring locally by default. Cash is lower than either route above and equity carries much of the value, which makes the company's stage and terms the number that actually matters.

LEVELREPORTED RANGE
Entry to mid₹18 LPA - ₹28 LPA
COMPANIES WE PUT IN THIS TIER (1)

Reported starting range for India AI startups, not a figure reported for this company, and it rises with seniority. At this tier read the equity terms carefully; that is where the upside and the risk both sit.

NOT AN INDIA ROUTE

Two groups are worth naming rather than pricing. Anduril, Shield AI, SpaceX do US defence and national-security work, where the relevant roles routinely require US citizenship or an active clearance, so pay is not the thing standing in the way. For Alibaba, Baidu, ByteDance, DeepSeek, Stanford AI Lab, Tencent we could not trace an India hiring route for this role at all, which is a statement about what we could verify rather than proof that none exists.
