The role, and the engagement loop
What a forward deployed engineer actually is, how the title fragments across companies, and how a customer engagement runs from first call to handover. The context every later round assumes you already have.
The decomposition round
Palantir's signature round and its imitators: turning a vague business goal into components, interfaces and a plan you can defend. This is the round most candidates fail, and the one that is hardest to practise alone.
Coding and practical builds
The coding an FDE loop actually asks for, which is integration work and multi-part builds under time pressure rather than competitive puzzles. Including what changes when the interviewer expects you to use AI tools.
Applied LLMs, RAG and agents
Retrieval that survives a customer's real documents, evaluation before launch, guardrails that hold, and the judgment to say when an agent is the wrong answer. The part of the job that did not exist five years ago.
Production debugging and deployment
Works in staging, breaks in production. Drift, skew, silent degradation, and taking a pilot that impressed someone to a system that meets a real SLA in an environment you do not control.
The customer rounds
Explaining a tradeoff to someone non-technical, holding the room when a demo breaks, saying no to a customer, and the behavioural rounds that decide more offers than anyone admits.

Can I get the book with a free account?
No. The book is a premium benefit. A free account gets you a larger share of the answer bank than an anonymous visitor, and the early-access list is open to anyone, but the book itself requires premium.
