FEDITOR'S NOTE

The word doing the work is 'genuinely'. Interviewers have heard several hundred safe answers and can identify one instantly, because a safe answer has no stakes and therefore nothing to learn from. The follow-up that breaks rehearsed responses is not 'what would you do differently', which everyone has prepared, it is 'and did you actually do that later?'. An answer that carries its own second instance, where the changed behavior showed up in a later situation, closes that door before it opens.
